Lawrence
Mudford qualified as a dental surgeon in 1981 and, following a wide range of
experience in both hospital and community services, entered dental practice at
Heathcote House in 1984.
Having achieved success in the MGDS examination
at the Royal College of Surgeons in 1992, Lawrence undertook a further two years
study, leading to a Masters degree in prosthetic dentistry in 1995.
He
then set up a comprehensive referral service for dentists and their patients in
the Sussex region, welcoming the referral of more complicated cases in the
discipline of denture construction.
In 2002 Lawrence was awarded a
Fellowship of the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners of the Royal College
of Surgeons of England, following examination, which is the highest
qualification available to general practitioners in the United Kingdom.
Within the dental profession Lawrence is very active in education,
having held a teaching post at Guy’s Dental Hospital, lecturing widely to
undergraduates, postgraduate dentists and newly qualified students, and has been
a trainer for the Vocational Training Course for recently qualified dentists.
These lectures and courses provide to other dentists excellent opportunities to
relate the special skills that he has acquired in both general practice and
denture provision.
Other areas that Lawrence has an interest in are;
education for dental nurses, where he acts as a teacher and examiner for the
National Examination Board of Dental Nurses; reviewing textbooks for a dental
journal and writing articles in the dental press.
Lawrence has recently
been made a Fellowship examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons, and was
elected as a Board member of the Faculty in March 2004.
Outside of the world of dentistry, Lawrence is Chair of Governors at the
village primary school, where he lives and takes an active part in the life of
the Christian Church which he and his family attend. Relaxation and family life
is a very important ingredient, which balance his active roles. These include
watercolour painting, reading and music, and acting as a taxi service for his
children!
Lawrence and his wife, Jan, live in the beautiful Mid-Sussex
region with their four children.
